POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

pURPOSE

The book has been created with the purpose of providing sequential positive reinforcement. Engagement is encouraged through an adventurous game with Token Reinforcers (stickers).

4 types of positive reinforcement

REINFORCEMENT / REINFORCERS

Token reinforcers

Awards for performing behaviors and can be exchanged for something of value.

  • Teachers/parents devise a reward system in which the child earns points, stars or in this case stickers

  • Children can turn in their points for stars stickers as a reward

Natural reinforcers

Reinforcers that occur directly as a result of the behavior

  • A student studies hard and does well on their exam, resulting in good grades

  • A child shares a toy and receives a hug, resulting in feeling appreciated

Social reinforcers

Reinforcers that involve others expressing their approval or a behavior

  • A teacher/parent saying, “Awesome job! or “Excellent work!” to a student

tangible reinforcers

Reinforcers that are actual physical or tangible rewards

  • Toys, treats (ice-cream), etc. :)

context driven

  • The effectiveness of a reinforcer is dependent upon context

  • Natural reinforcers are often the most effective

  • Social reinforcers can also be extremely powerful

  • Tokens are often more useful with children

  • Tangible reinforcers are essential for training dogs
